The simulation of the fluid structure interaction of a vertical oscillating cylinder is performed through the coupling of FLUENT, ABAQUS and MpCCI. First, the Moving and Deforming Mesh models of FLUENT are validated through the forced vertical oscillating cylinder at Re = 200. The “lock in” phenomena are observed and the frequencies of vortex shedding reported by Li et al (2002) are accurately approximated by the FLUENT solver.
Next, the motion of a free vertical oscillating cylinder is simulated at Re = 106 by two different methods. The first method is based on the analytical solution of the unidirectional motion of the spring – mass – damping system where the structural system is solved by means of User Defined Functions. The second method couples the structural and fluid simulations by MpCCI. The obtained results from both methods are found in good agreement with published data, while minor differences are found between them. These differences are judged to be provoked by the impedance introduced by the coupling itself, by the time integration scheme and by the worsening of the mesh quality.
