On the prediction of internal flow in a tubular mixing device with slit diaphragms

Jens Zscheuschler, Ulrich Traegner, Hochschule Mannheim

at MpCCI UF 2008

The objective of the study is to investigate mixing quality of internal pipe flow. The new type of mixer investigated has build in elastic slit diaphragms that interact with the fluid flow. This interaction is responsible for the perfect mixing conditions for all flow conditions. Whether almost laminar, transient or fully turbulent, the elastic diaphragms’ free cross sections adjust automatically. Furthermore the individual segments of the diaphragms oscillate in an apparent arbitrary manner with base and harmonic frequencies, thus supporting the mixing process. The initial conditions of an almost closed diaphragm at startup, the relatively large displacement of the individual segments of the diaphragms for the different flow conditions and the superimposed oscillations are modeled successfully with the combination of FLUENT, ABAQUS and MpCCI.
